kenya blog # 10: rescued, redeemed, given new life, adopted

(george, joel, ellice)

the cutest kids you have ever seen live at the corner of lenana and turbo roads in nairobi, kenya.

after our first full day at the orphanage(i know, i'm out of order in these blogs), our team time was focused around the question "how did you see God today?"

we talked a lot about God as our rescuer and redeemer. these children have all come from hospitals where their mothers left them or ditches or fields where they were thrown for dead.

they were rescued from near dead, redeemed from that former life.

two new babies were brought to the home that day from a local hospital. hannah got to watch one of the caregivers say what i believe they say to all new arrivals, which is "welcome to new life homes, you have a new life"

we had learned from clive and mary about one of the babies named dwight. his mother had tried to abort him and obviously it didn't work. he was found in a field approximately 3 days after birth. his open wounds (from the failed abortion) had ants crawling in and out of them. he was not cleaned off or fed, near dead.
he has been given a new chance at life. he will have some developmental problems, but he is alive and well- the most content baby i've ever seen.

the next day, two of the kids we'd gotten attached to (yes, really) were all dolled up for their adoptive parents to arrive. we were dreading giving them up after 2 whole days of fun with them!

(isaac and elizabeth)

i was actually holding elizabeth and standing near the window when the danish mother and father got out of their car to come toward the building. i know they saw her through the window, and i'm sure the recognized their daughter from the pictures they'd received. i put her down so she could go to them when they came in the room. the mother picked up elizabeth, and the father picked up isaac. i've never seen a parent hold a child like that- incredibly treasured and loved, like long lost prodigals returned home. as myself and two others from our team had tears streaming down our faces at this historic moment, i said to them that these two kids had no idea their entire lives just changed. they probably won't remember the first two years of their lives spent at NLH, and they may not remember the day they weren't brother and sister. they were being adopted as siblings, but are not biologically related. it was an incredible moment and God let me see a tiny glimpse of how he has adopted each of us and longs to have us as his children like those parents. i don't remember my life before Christ but i know i was adopted as His child and that my life has never been the same.
